Trained in civil law and common law jurisdiction, Héctor Fernández is an international lawyer admitted to practice law in Colombia and Venezuela. He is also a candidate to be admitted to practice as a lawyer for the New York State Bar (2023-2024).
Mr. Fernandez has more than 25 years of experience in complex commercial & corporate disputes, both international and domestic arbitration, art-related disputes, class actions and group litigation. He worked as an independent consultant with the International Arbitration Department of Reed Smith LLP.
Currently, Mr. Fernandez is a member of the panel of arbitrators of the Court of Arbitration for Art.
Also, Mr. Fernandez has represented victims of commercial aviation disasters for over more than ten years, in partnertship with Podhurst Orseck, P.A.
Hector Fernandez has provided counsel to the United States Embassy and Colombian Embassy in Venezuela.
Since 2002, Mr. Fernandez has been teaching Civil, Procedural and Commercial Law in the School of Law at top universities in Venezuela and in Colombia and has published several articles in a wide variety of matters He was an academic coordinator at Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s Law Program for Latin America and also an academic coordinator of the renowned Yearbook of Latin America Constitutional Law.
Mr. Fernandez is a member of the American Bar Association, the Miami International Arbitration Society (MIAS) and the Miami Law International Arbitration Society (MLIAS), as well as a member of the Asociacion Venezolana de Arbitraje (AVA). He has participated in numerous speaking engagements and has made TV guest appearances.
Mr. Fernandez’s educational background includes Universidad Católica Andres Bello, Venezuela (LL.B. 1998); Universidad de Salamanca (Specialization in Procedural Law 2004); Universidad Católica Andres Bello (Specialization in Procedural Law 2005); a Law Degree Validation from Universidad Católica de Colombia (2018) and University of Miami School of Law (LL.M. in International Arbitration 2021).
